Our Town
Carlisle was formerly known as Fish Dam. It
was named after a dam built by Native
Americans on Broad River in the 1700’s to aid
in their fishing efforts. The dam is still there.
Sumter National Forest, a well-known
recreational area managed by the U.S. Forest
Service and named for Thomas Sumter who
fought the British during the Revolutionary
War, is located just outside of Carlisle.
Carlisle is only fifteen minutes from Union and
less than an hour from big cities such as
Charlotte, Spartanburg, and Columbia.
Whether it’s the dense woodlands, towering
white clouds against a powder-blue sky, a
spectacular rainbow at Broad River, or the
sweet smell of nature, Carlisle is a forest
paradise; ideal for nature walks, camping,
hunting (deer and turkey), fishing, boating,
horseback riding, and other outdoor activities
and fun.
